Cleveland Clinic and Anthem Are Negotiating as Ohio Medicare Advantage Members Choose 2027 Plans

Cleveland Clinic's provider network contract with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Ohio expires December 31, 2026, and no replacement deal has been announced. Ohio Anthem Medicare Advantage members who use Cleveland Clinic face an added consideration during the current open enrollment window.

Cleveland Clinic, one of Ohio's largest health systems, confirmed this week that it is in active contract talks with Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. The current provider network agreement covering Ohio expires December 31, 2026. If the two parties do not reach a new contract before that date, Cleveland Clinic facilities and providers in Ohio would no longer be in-network for certain Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans starting January 1, 2027.

The dispute lands during Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. Ohio residents who receive care at Cleveland Clinic and hold Anthem Medicare Advantage plans may want to account for the uncertainty when weighing 2027 plan options. Cleveland Clinic said nothing changes before January 1, 2027, and that current appointments and scheduled care can continue as usual while talks are ongoing.

Ohio Anthem Medicare Advantage members: Cleveland Clinic's network contract expires December 31. No new deal has been announced yet.

Anthem Medicaid, MyCare Ohio, and Medicare Supplement plans are not part of the current negotiations and would not be affected regardless of the outcome. Anthem Medicare Advantage plans in Ohio are the ones at issue.

Both organizations say they are negotiating in good faith. Cleveland Clinic is directing affected patients to its Anthem insurance page for updates as talks continue.

In plain words

Cleveland Clinic and Anthem insurance have a contract that ends December 31, 2026. If they cannot agree on a new one, Anthem Medicare Advantage members in Ohio will be out of network at Cleveland Clinic starting January 1, 2027. Right now, nothing has changed, and you can still see your Cleveland Clinic doctors as usual. But if you have Anthem Medicare Advantage and get care at Cleveland Clinic, this is worth knowing about while you are comparing 2027 plans during open enrollment. Medicaid and Medicare Supplement plans are not affected.
