Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and James Cancer Center Leave Individual Humana Medicare Advantage Network October 1

Humana's individual Medicare Advantage contract with Ohio State University facilities expires without renewal on October 1. Group Medicare and Medicaid coverage through Humana is not affected.

By the Goodsurance editorial teamSeptember 17, 2026

Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, The James Cancer Center, and affiliated Ohio State physicians will be out of network for individual Humana Medicare Advantage members starting October 1, 2026, Humana confirmed. Humana notified Ohio State that it was not renewing the individual Medicare Advantage portion of their agreement. Ohio State said it remains interested in reaching a new contract, and Humana said it is open to continued discussions. The expiration does not affect Humana Medicaid members or people who receive their group Medicare coverage through a former employer or union, both of whom retain in-network access to Ohio State facilities. Patients who are already in active treatment for a serious condition, such as a cancer patient at The James, may qualify for continuity-of-care protections that allow continued access at in-network cost-sharing rates for a transition period. Members who want to find a plan that keeps Ohio State in network, or switch insurers, can do so during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, which runs October 15 through December 7, 2026, with coverage beginning January 1, 2027. Beneficiaries who cannot wait until January should contact 1-800-MEDICARE to ask about a special enrollment period based on a significant coverage change.

Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and James Cancer Center leave individual Humana Medicare Advantage network October 1. Open enrollment to switch plans begins October 15.

In plain words

If you have a Humana Medicare Advantage plan that you bought yourself, Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and The James Cancer Center will not be covered as in-network starting October 1, 2026. Going out of network usually means higher costs for the same care. If you are in the middle of treatment, like cancer care, ask Humana about continuity-of-care rights that may let you keep your current doctors temporarily. People with Humana through a former job or union are not affected. Medicare open enrollment starts October 15, 2026, and you can switch plans then for January 1, 2027 coverage.
