Humana's Non-Renewal Notices Are Reaching Mailboxes Now for 600,000 Medicare Advantage Members Whose Plans End in 2027

Humana confirmed it is exiting Medicare Advantage plans covering roughly 600,000 members for 2027. Termination letters are mailing in September, and federal rules unlock a guaranteed-issue Medigap window and a Special Enrollment Period for every affected member.

Humana confirmed during its July 29, 2026 earnings call that it will exit Medicare Advantage plans covering approximately 600,000 members for the 2027 plan year, representing about 8 percent of its total Medicare Advantage enrollment of roughly 7.2 million. Non-renewal letters are being mailed to affected members in September 2026, ahead of the federal deadline requiring plans to notify members of plan terminations by September 30.

The exits are concentrated in contracts rated 3.5 stars or below under Medicare's quality bonus system, though Humana leadership stated the decisions were not driven solely by star ratings. The company expects to recapture roughly 40 percent of departing members by offering them other Humana plans that will continue operating.

Letters are arriving now for 600,000 Humana Medicare Advantage members whose plans will end December 31, 2026.

Members who receive a non-renewal notice have several options before coverage ends December 31, 2026. A Special Enrollment Period is available from the date of the notice through February 28, 2027, during which affected members can join a new Medicare Advantage or Part D plan outside the standard calendar. The Annual Enrollment Period, running October 15 through December 7, 2026, is another window to compare and switch coverage for 2027.

Members who choose to return to traditional Medicare and purchase a Medigap supplemental policy within 63 days of their plan's end date have a federal guaranteed-issue right. Under that right, insurers may not decline applicants or charge more based on health status. Humana's exit is part of a broader pattern, with other major insurers and regional plans also reducing their Medicare Advantage footprints for 2027.

In plain words

Humana is ending some of its Medicare health plans in 2027. About 600,000 people will lose their current plan. Those people are getting letters in the mail right now. If you get one of these letters, you need to pick a new plan before December 31, 2026. You can look at new plans during Open Enrollment, which starts October 15. You can also buy extra coverage called Medigap. If you buy it within 63 days after your Humana plan ends, the insurance company cannot turn you down because of your health. You also have a Special Enrollment Period that lets you pick a new plan through February 28, 2027.
