Pet insurance for multiple pets: how it works and what discounts look like

Last reviewed October 30, 20265 min readBy the Goodsurance editorial team Reviewed by the Goodsurance editorial team

Most pet insurers do not sell one policy that covers two pets together. Each pet gets its own policy, with its own deductible and limits. You can usually manage them in one account. Many insurers take 5% or 10% off when you insure more than one pet.

The short answer

If you have two dogs and a cat, you will most likely have three policies. They may sit in one account with one login. But each pet is priced and covered on its own.

That is how the insurers we checked describe it. ASPCA Pet Health Insurance says each pet has its own policy with a separate premium. (A premium is the price you pay for coverage.) Lemonade says each pet needs its own policy. Nationwide says you enroll a new pet in a separate policy but manage all your pets in one account.

New to the basics? Start with how pet insurance works.

Separate policies mean separate deductibles

A deductible is the part of the vet bill you pay before the plan starts to pay. With more than one pet, each pet usually has its own.

Pets Best says a new pet added online has its own yearly limit, deductible, and reimbursement percentage. (Reimbursement is the share of the bill the plan pays back.) Lemonade says you can pick a different deductible and limit for each pet.

This has two effects:

  • One pet's bills do not help another pet. If your dog meets its deductible, your cat still has to meet its own.
  • You can match each plan to each pet. A young cat and an older dog may need different choices.

Claims are separate too. Lemonade says that if two pets see the vet on the same day, you still file a claim for each one, even if they share one bill.

For more on these choices, see deductibles, reimbursement, and limits.

Multi-pet discounts by insurer

All six insurers we checked offer a discount when you insure more than one pet. We read each one's own website on October 29, 2026.

InsurerMulti-pet discountFine print on the site
ASPCA Pet Health Insurance10%On the base plan premium, for each added pet.
Embrace10%Says rates and discounts vary.
Spot10%On every pet after the first. Varies by state.
Lemonade5% to 10%Its main pet page says 5%. Its FAQ says up to 10%. Check your quote.
Nationwide5%Rises to 10% with four or more pets.
Pets Best5%On accident and illness plans (all plans in Washington).

Discounts change and differ by state. Treat this table as a starting point. Confirm the number on your own quote.

Also look at what the discount applies to. ASPCA says its discount is on the base plan price. Lemonade says its discounts apply to the base plan and two add-ons, but not to its preventive care packages or other add-ons. So some add-ons may cost full price.

Worked example: two dogs and a cat

This is example math only, not a quote. It uses national averages from NAPHIA (the trade group for pet insurers). In 2025 the average yearly price for an accident and illness plan was $836 for a dog and $435 for a cat.

StepMathYearly total
Two dogs$836 + $836$1,672
Add one cat$1,672 + $435$2,107
With a 5% discount$2,107 minus about $105about $2,002
With a 10% discount$2,107 minus about $211about $1,896

In this example, the discount saves about $105 to $211 a year. That helps. But it is small next to the total. The bigger levers are the choices you make for each pet: the deductible, the reimbursement level, and the yearly limit.

Your real prices depend on each pet's breed, age, and your ZIP code. See pet insurance cost explained for what drives the price.

Do all your pets need the same insurer?

No. You can insure each pet with a different company. But at the insurers we checked, the multi-pet discount is for pets insured with that same company. Pets Best, for example, says all the policies must be with the same underwriter (the company that carries the risk).

Some people insure every pet. Others insure only the pet most likely to need costly care. There is no single right answer. Think about each pet's age, breed, and health. Think about how big a surprise bill you could pay on your own. Our guide is pet insurance worth it walks through that choice.

One more point: adding a pet later is fine. Lemonade says that once you buy a second policy, the discount applies to both, and you get the difference back on the first one. A new pet still starts its own waiting period.

The trap: assuming one deductible covers the house

If two pets get sick in the same year, you may pay two deductibles. Budget for that before you pick a high deductible to lower the price.

Questions for the insurer

  • What is the multi-pet discount in my state?

Some insurers give less, or none, in some states.

  • Which part of the price gets the discount?

    Add-ons may not be discounted.

  • Does each pet have its own deductible?

This changes how much you pay in a bad year.

  • Can I pick different plans for each pet?

A young pet and an older pet may need different choices.

  • If I add a pet later, does the discount still apply?

Ask whether it applies to the first policy too.

Can I get one policy for two pets?

Usually not. The insurers we checked give each pet its own policy. You can often manage them in one account, and you may get a multi-pet discount.

How much is the multi-pet discount?

Among the insurers we checked on October 29, 2026, it was 5% or 10%. ASPCA, Embrace, and Spot list 10%. Nationwide and Pets Best list 5%. Lemonade's pages say 5% in one place and up to 10% in another, so check your quote.

Do multiple pets share one deductible?

Usually not. Each pet has its own policy, so each pet has its own deductible and yearly limit.

Do I have to insure all my pets with the same company?

No. But the multi-pet discount usually applies only when the pets are with the same insurer.

Can I insure a dog and a cat together?

Yes, at the insurers we checked. They will be two policies, one per pet. Lemonade, for example, says its discount applies when you insure more than one cat or dog with it.
